EPIGLOTTIS

EPIGLOTTIS is a prototype artwork created during the research development phase of my Masters project. I am interested in creating work that explores the repressed or dark parts of the human psyche. For this project, I wanted to see if I could pull some of these aspects out of the dark and imagine them as a living breathing entity.

The term “id” (Freud) describes one of the three components of the human psyche, which lies beneath both the ego and the superego. The id is the most primitive part of the mind. It operates entirely in the unconscious and is driven by instinctual desires, particularly for sex and aggression. Freud described the id as a chaotic and amoral force governed by the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification without regard for logic, morality, or consequence.

This work is representative of these dark, unconscious, human desires.

Id Hermetic

Following this concept through photography, I imagined a thin, fragile membrane separating the conscious mind from amorality, a boundary that is inaccessible, yet ever present. Through materiality and light, this membrane is rendered as both barrier and threshold, suggesting the tension between moral order and instinctual drive.
